If you suffer with a lot of spots or acne, try lowering the saturated fats in diet, eat tofu or soy 3 times per week, drink at least 8 glasses of water per day to flush toxins, eat calcium rich food to prevent infection such as dark green leafy vegetables and nuts such as almonds.

Natural remedies that can help acne are: High potency B complex, MSM Sulphur, Flaxseed Oil (linseed oil capsules) and zinc.

In our experience there is a likelihood of gut dysbiosis ( bacteria out of balance in the intestines). Try a 14-day parasite cleanse Follow this 30 day programme with a course of Biphidophilus to repopulate the bowel with good bacteria. Avoid dairy produce and taking antioxidant vitamins ( Vitamin C, A, and E) whilst on this programme.

After following this programme, try taking the Traditional Chinese formula Peony and Cinnamon Combinationfor 3 months even if the acne symptoms have improved.

It is worth considering using herbs for a bowel cleanse every 6 months to keep the system detoxified, thus preventing and acne outbreak reoccuring. Try the 10 - 20 day cleansing programme Healthy Starter Pack.

Adrenal exhaustion

Happened on 18 November 2007  | ( 0 ) Comments

Symptoms include extreme fatigue, frequent urination at night, night sweats, waking up around 4 am in the morning. Another notable symptom is that a person with adrenal exhaustion will feel better for pushing themselves to do things, e.g. exercise. They particularly feel fatigued when they stop.

As well as changing your lifestyle, which is highly necessary, the adrenal glands do really benefit from nutritional support to help restore them so that they function in a more balanced way, rather than reacting inappropriately to minor stresses.

Try one or more of the following remedies that we like to use in our clinic to help people who have adrenal stress:

Biota and Schizandra Combination
Licorice and Dandelion Combination
Master Gland
Nutri-Calm

Alzheimer's Disease

Happened on 18 November 2007  | ( 0 ) Comments

Cerebral disorder where free radical activity is implicated. The diagnosis can only truly be made post mortem, which in patients with the disease shows atrophy (shrinking of tissue) of the brain, plaques and fibrous nerve tangles in the brain.

Whilst genetic factors have an influence, these are far outweighed by environmental factors. Some of these may include traumatic head injury at some time in life, chronic exposure to aluminium and toxic metals and /or chemicals and other substances toxic to the nervous system. Oxidative damage plays a major role.

Symptoms include loss of memory and cognitive functions, inability to carry out daily activities.

Eliminate any obstacles to the healing process such as:
  • Eliminating aluminium cookware, foil, baking poder, antacids, antiperspirants, contaminated water

  • Address dietary imbalances by avoiding man-made sugars such as cakes, jams, sweets, chocolate and sugary drinks. Avoid refined foods such as white bread

  • One of the key reasons people can suffer from memory loss in old age is because they neglect eating regularly and properly. They may prefer eating sweets and cakes rather than be bothered to cook a good meal. Include social support in order to ensure that the sufferer has a balanced diet of whole natural foods. This is highly important if deteriation is to be curtailed

  • Take a high potency vitamin and mineral formula such as one of those suggested on the right of this page. These will help to combat free radical damage that can affect the brain.

  • Depression
If there is depression, taking flaxseed oil, L acetylcarnitine and ginko biloba are recommended.

    Huperzine
The Chinese herb Huperzine has been shown to improve cognitive function in many of those who take it. Nature's Sunshine Brain Protex with Huperzine contains this herb.

    Oxidative stress and the brain
Antioxidants are really important to reduce oxidative stress. As well as a high potency multi vitamin and mineral, Grapine from grape seed extract is known to be very beneficial in reducing free radical overload.

    Other considerations
Homocysteine levels can be high because of a deficiency in folic acid, B6 and zinc. This can cause inflammation in the brain as well as the arteries. A deficiency in thiamin (vitamin B1) can impair cognitive skills. All of these are found in a high potency multi vitamin and mineral complex.

Chlorophyll, the 'blood' of plants, contains almost identical ingredients to our own blood. Drinking or taking capsules that contain high quantities can be helpful.
We use traditional Chinese herbal remedies in our clinic which are designed to support the liver and provide nutrients for the blood.

Remedies: Try Liquid Chlorophyll and the Chinese formula Lyceum and Peony Combination

Cervical Dysplasia - Abnormal Cervical Smear Test

    Happened on 18 November 2007  | ( 0 ) Comments

Cervical dysplasia means the appearance of abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix. It is generally regarded as pre -cancerous. It is not a cancerous state, but if untreated could lead to a problem.

Causes of abnormal cells include the herpes simplex type II infection, smoking, oral contraceptive use, multiple sexual partners or sexual intercourse from an early age, and many nutritional factors - i.e. insufficient nutrition in the diet.

The following suggestions for treatment of cervical dysplasia with natural remedies should be accompanied by regular checkups and proper medical treatment prescribed by your doctor.

There are numerous nutritional factors implicated in the development of cervical dysplasia. Supplementing the diet with these may be extremely helpful in correcting this pre cancerous condition and prevent recurrence of the problem once treated.

67% of patients with cervical cancer have nutritional deficiencies. Many others have been shown to have marginal but 'normal' nutritional levels. This shows the high implication of diet.

The main nutrients that have been studied as to their effects on cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer are Vitamin A and beta carotene. Beta Carotene is seen as being particularly important because of its antioxidant properties. Research has also shown that the lower level of beta carotene in the blood, the greater the stage of cervical dysplasia. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that also strengthens the cells of the tissue, enhances immune function and inhibits carcinogen formation.

Folic acid deficiency in red blood cells is the most common deficiency in cervical dysplasia and its deficiency is increased by the birth control pill and pregnancy. It is possible that many abnormal Pap smears reflect a folate deficiency rather than a true cervical dysplasia. This is particularly the case in individuals who are also taking 'the pill'.

Vitamin B6 is deficient in a third of patients with cervical cancer. B6 is important to help the liver break down oestrogens in the body and helps to increase immune response.

Selenium levels are also found to be significantly low in patients with cervical dysplasia. Selenium helps the body to excrete toxic metals such as cadmium, lead, mercury and toxic levels of these metals may have a role in cervical disease, although this has not been proven.

Take at least one B Complex so that you're taking at least 50mg of the main B vitamins to provide B6 and Folic Acid, at least 1 gram of vitamin C, a beta carotene formula, a mineral formula on an ongoing basis and consider taking a herbal combination made specifically to support the healing of the cervix and containing antiviral and anti bacterial herbs such as the excellent Chinese herbal formula Dandelion and Purslane for at least 3 months.

    Chillblains

    Happened on 18 November 2007  | ( 0 ) Comments

Chilblains are an itchy purple-red swelling, usually on a toe or finger, caused by poor circulation in the extremities. Mostly these only occur during cold weather.

Natural remedies for chilblains would include herbal remedies that help to improve the circulation. These can work well, particularly if taken about a month before and during the 'chilblain' season. Taking the remedies prior to getting chilblains will ensure that the circulation has improved before any of the symptoms appear.

    Try the following remedies;

Capsicum and Garlic and Parsley is useful if you also suffer from high blood pressure
If you also suffer from dry skin, brittle nails and hair, try Horsetail and Rosemary Combination
If you also tend to suffer from varicose veins, try Horse Chestnut and Butchers Broom Combination

    High Cholesterol Levels

    Happened on 18 November 2007  | ( 0 ) Comments

The ration between HDL's & LDLs are the most significant.

Plant sterols and polycosanol and inositol can be very useful in helping to lower cholesterol levels. Try Cholester-Reg II and High Potency Garlic

The suggestions listed help to stimulate bile production of which cholesterol is a constituent. Thus if more bile is produced and enough fibre is being consumed to carry excess fat from the body, this can help reduce levels. Fat Grabbers is a fibre combination that reduces the amount of fat absorbed by the body.

    Cystitis

    Happened on 18 November 2007  | ( 0 ) Comments

There are two main types of cystitis (inflammation of the bladder). One is caused by a bacterial infection and is sometimes call urinary tract infection. The other is called interstitial cystitis that has an unknown cause.
It is more common in women than men, due to women having a shorter urethra (tube from the bladder to the outside), but the treatment would be the same.

The diagnosis of urethritis may be given. This can be caused by bladder trauma that is thought to be caused by sexual activity.

Symptoms are frequent urging to urninate when there is little urine in the bladder, burning pain on urination and general discomfort in the bladder area. Sometimes urine can appear cloudy and blood could be present. Medical advice should be sought as untreated, it could lead to kidney damage.

Advice is to drink copious amounts of water, either hot or cold. Avoid tea or coffee. Sometimes cystitis can be caused by food intolerances that can cause irritation of the bladder. Try eliminating citrus fruits and tomatoes. Cystitis can also be attributed to a wheat, dairy and sugar intolerances. Try avoiding some of these foods for about 2 weeks and not any changes in symptoms. Visit a kinesiologist who will be able to help determine food intolerances if doing it yourself brings no relief. Your practitioner may be able to carry out a gentle procedure to help stop the bladder from going into spasm.

Other causes can be bacterial infection, in which case, taking Cranberry and Buchu Herbal Combination and Pau D'Arco Extract (Lapacho) can be very helpful. If there is a persistence in symptoms and your medical doctor has ruled out an infection, other causes of cystitis could be a yeast infection such as candida albicans or parasites. Diabetes Type 2 - Late Onset Diabetes

    Happened on 18 November 2007  | ( 0 ) Comments

Late onset diabetes. Usually caused by the cells of the body being resistant to insulin, causing too much sugar in the blood. Sorbitol in the blood then can cause diabetic cataracts and neurological sequelae such as peripheral nerve damage.

The long term effects may be greatly reduced by supplementing with antioxidants and herbs and minerals that play a part in helping the body to regulate blood glucose levels

Remedies that we use in our clinic include:

    Zambroza
Golden Seal and Juniper Combination contains 14 herbs that support the pancreas
The cactus Nopal is known to have blood sugar handling properties
GTF Chromium an important factor that is involved in glucose regulation in the body
