Haemhorroids - Piles

Hemorrhoids or piles are extremely common in the western world. Most people begin to develop haemorroids in their 20s but symptoms are not usually evident until their 30s. 50% of individuals develop symptoms from haemorrhoids in their 50s.
The causes are similar to those of varicose veins: excessive weakness of veins that can be inherited, excessive pressure on veins during pregnancy, long periods of standing or sitting or heavy lifting. The veins that feed the liver contain no valves so when pressure builds in these veins it causes pressure in the veins around the anus that can induce haemorrhoid formation. Pressure in the abdomen can also cause pressure in the veins around the anus. This can be due to straining to open bowels when constipated, pregnancy, coughing, sneezing, vomiting, physical exertion, portal hypertension due to cirrhosis of the liver. As previously stated, long periods of standing or sitting can induce pooling of blood in the veins of the abdomen that can affect the veins around the anus.

Constipation shoudl be avoided at all costs. Ensure that your diet is rich in fibre - at least 30 grams per day.
If you find this difficult to achieve, take a fibre supplement. The ones we recommend are TNT (Total Nutrition Today) or Psyllium Hulls Combination which should greatly help. You may also still need soluble fibre if you suffer with diarrhoea as they will bulk up the stool and slow down transit time. Diarrhoea can be a symptom of too little fibre in the diet.
