Keloids & Large Scars

posted on 18 November 2007 | posted in Health Tips

A keloid is a raised irregularly shaped itchy scar on the skin. A kelloid occurs because of and excess of collagen (a tough fibrous protein) that forms at the site of a healing scar. Keloids occur more often in black people than in white people and usually occur around the breast bone and shoulder area.

Surgery is of no use since the kelloids just grow back. After a few months they become less itchy and less prominent.

One study of 227 patiens with keloids or hypertrophic scars were treated with Gotu Kola(also known as centella). 82% of the group showed improvement after between 2 to 18 months. They had relief from their symptoms and a disappearance of the inflammation in the scar tissue.

People that are prone to kelloids who need surgery were started on gotu kola a few weeks prior. They remained taking it for a further 3 months after surgery. Clinical improvement was observed in 72 out of 88 patients. Dosage is 2 to 4 grams of the dried encapsulated herb per day.
