Do You Experience Unexplained Symptoms? It Could Be An Ileocaecal Valve Problem!posted on 4 August 2006 | posted in Health ArticlesDo you have any unexplained health problems that no one can seem to get to the bottom of? You could have a dysfunctional ileocaecal valve. The ileocaecal valve (ICV) was once thought to be simply a one-way valve, which maintained the proper flow by reason of its shape. Applied Kinesiology has reinforced the idea that the valve is muscular and under autonomic nerve control. There is an emotional factor also. The colloquial "gut reaction" to stress affects the function of the valve. The valve is non-return and holds liquid chyme (digested food) in the small intestine until all the desirable absorption has taken place. Then it allows sections of chyme to pass into the large intestine, as it becomes waste. It also prevents the matter now destined to become faecal from returning to be reabsorbed by the villi in the small intestine. When relaxed, in normal tonus, the valve is closed, and should not open except when a section of chyme is ready to pass through. The pressure of the peristaltic action of the large intestine helps keep the valve shut. The ICV is located on the right side of the trunk roughly half way between the navel and the protruding pelvic bone – in the same vicinity as the appendix. If the ileocaecal valve is out of balance it can feel tender in that area. If in spasm, or neurological input excessive, the valve stays open and leaks. If flaccid, without tone, it stays shut causing putrefaction due to delay in proper transit time. In Chinese Medicine, the ileo caecal valve is related to the kidney meridian. Predisposing factors to ileocaecal valve syndrome Poor diet, irregular meals Diet too high in fibre, raw foods and fruit Allergies to commonly consumed foods Gut flora disturbance and infestation of undesirable bacteria and fungi. Parasites Hypoglycaemia is often concurrent Lack of proper toilet training Lack of exercise Emotional shock or trauma Continual emotional strain List of possible symptoms of auto-intoxication These are not put forward as a complete list, but the following give some idea of the diversity of effects people can suffer. If you have 3 or more of the above symptoms, ileocaecal valve syndrome may well be involved in your health problem. If you haven't already, do visit your doctor with any of these symptoms to rule out any serious health problem. SELF-MANAGEMENT OF ILEO-CAECAL SYNDROME We recommend that you visit a kinesiologist or a reflexologist for a correct assessment and treatment. However, we recommend the following regime that can be tried at home or in addition to the treatment given by a practitioner. 2 capsules 3 times daily - as directed on the tub of Bistort Formula 1 tsp Chlorophyll - Liquid three times daily Water: the only substance taken orally that does not require digesting. Several glasses should be drunk daily in between meals, up to a ¼ hr before, and not until 1 hr after meals. Avoid Stimulants & Irritants Tea, coffee, alcohol, carbonated drinks, black pepper, curries and other highly spiced foods. Proper Mastication: Important to chew food thoroughly to ensure proper digestion. Avoid Roughage for Two weeks: It isn't well understood that raw food can constitute an irritant to the bowels. The media has told us to eat wheat bran and roughage. Many people have an irritated gut because of this. Eating bran doesn't suit everyone. After 2 weeks if you don’t have enough roughage in your diet, include a supplement such as Fibre Supreme - Dietary Fibre in Capsules Eat Yoghurt or take probiotics: Sufficient quantities of lactobacillus acidophilus, either as a preparation such as Acidophilus Supreme or Bifidophilus (Milk Free) or in yoghurt - preferably goats, will assist in the re-establishment of the proper intestinal flora. Exercise: Regular moderate exercise helps restore tone to the bowel Allergens: Avoid any foods to which you know that you are sensitive to. Allergens will only hasten a return of the improper operation of the valve. Touch lightly with the palm of your hand over the valve area (on the right side of the body half way between the navel and the protrusion of your pelvic bone) after eating and after opening bowels. Hold the area to encourage blood to flow to the area for about 1 minute. Feel free to e-mail this article to a friend, or make a copy for your own use. Share this blog entry:
