Article and Case Histories about Kinesiology

MUSCLE POWER
Kinesiologists work on the premise that ill health may be caused by toxins accumulating in the major muscle groups such as the biceps in the upper arms, and the quadriceps in the thigh. When the body is overloaded with toxins or is unwell, certain muscle groups become switched off or blocked. This makes the muscle group weak and its corresponding parts of the body.

A relatively new treatment, it was discovered by Dr George Goodheart, an American chiropractor, in the 1960s. He was manipulating a man whose shoulder blade kept popping out. When he examined the muscle which worked the shoulder blade, he found that there were knobbly lumps on the rib cage which related to the shoulder blade.

When Dr Goodheart rubbed these lumps it restored the strength of the muscle he was testing. He also found that a weak muscle on one side of the body had a corresponding muscle on the other side, which was tight. By massaging the weaker muscle to get the energy moving, he found that the other muscle became less tight.

Dr Goodheart devised a series of muscle tests to find out where the imbalances were occurring.

Kinesiologist, Terry Larder says: "The client lies down on a couch fully clothed and is asked to hold up an arm or leg and match the pressure put on it by the therapist who pushes against it with their own arm. Sometimes it locks and resists the pressure, indicating strength, but other times it goes floppy or wobbly to show that there is a weakness."

The kinesiologist can also use the muscle testing technique to discover allergies – if the muscle goes weak when, for example a piece of bread is put in the mouth or on the cheek or navel, they believe it indicates an allergy or intolerance to wheat.

Conversely if the muscle is strengthened by specific herbs, homeopathic tablets or vitamins, which are placed on the navel or cheek the kinesiologist knows they are the appropriate remedies to use. Most kinesiologists practise other therapies such as nutrition, naturopathy, medical herbalism, homeopathy and reflexology so that they can provide all round help.

CASE STUDIES:
Jacqueline, a 37 year old mother of five year old Poppy and seven year old Callum, and a student, was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and given medication which didn’t work. She then had a colonoscopy to check for other problems, but nothing was found.

I constantly had unpleasant digestive problems and pain so I decided to visit kinesiologist Terry Larder. I didn’t know what I was letting myself in for and when she started testing my muscles I thought it was a crazy idea. Terry tested my arm and leg muscles against hers, and discovered I had a problem with my adrenal glands and pancreas. I wasn’t diabetic but if the problem was left untreated I could have ended up that way, particularly as my father had diabetes and I suffered from it while I was pregnant.”

Terry gave her various Phytobiophysics Flower Formulas, turmeric tablets for candida which is usually present in people with digestive problems, selenium and herbs to stop sugar cravings. “She discovered I was allergic to wheat, rice, milk, and sugar, so I went on a dairy and wheat-free diet. I began to lose weight immediately, the pain went and I now have so much energy. I’m like a new woman and I’m kept very busy with two young children, my university work, and dancing as well as being a school governor.

CASE STUDIES:
Rose, 53, was constantly in pain and depressed due to rheumatoid arthritis. ‘I felt my life had finished and thought I would be in a wheelchair forever.’

Although in severe pain Rose, who is a lab technician, continued to work. ‘I was constantly tired because I only got about two hours’ sleep a night because of the pain. The final straw was when I had to have several weeks off work for the first time.

‘I was taking three different types of drugs yet I knew in my heart that conventional medicine couldn’t help me. I tried homeopathy and that didn’t work for me, when a friend suggested I visit Terry Larder, who is a kinesiologist.

‘I hadn’t got a clue what the treatment was but my friend had been helped a lot. On the first visit I was asked a lot of questions about my lifestyle and health. Then I lay down on the couch and Terry tested my muscles, while putting various foods on my stomach.

‘She felt that most of my problems would be food based and immediately discovered that potatoes, the deadly nightshades - i.e. tomatoes, aubergines and peppers, and tea all made me react badly.

‘After discovering what I was allergic to I stopped eating those foods. Terry gave me herbal combinations and nutritional supplements too, and I soon felt fitter and healthier. That was over a year ago, and while I still have pain and take Ibuprofen, I now sleep well and live a normal life. I now feel that there’s a future for me.’
